A Driver's Guide to Handling Corporate Investigators at the Scene

If you are involved in a collision with a commercial carrier, you are not just dealing with an insurance company. You are dealing with a corporate risk management machine.

The “Rapid Response” Team

Major freight brokers like J.B. Hunt, Schneider, and XPO Logistics have rapid-response protocols. They may have investigators at the scene before the police have even cleared the wreckage. Their goal is to obtain statements while you are in shock.

Three Rules of the Scene

  1. Silence is Legal: You are required to provide identification and insurance information. You are NOT required to provide an “on the spot” narrative of the accident to a private investigator.
  2. Document the Grime: Take photos of the truck’s tires (for wear), the load securement straps, and the name on the side of the tractor. These labels identify the “DOT Number” which is key to our regulatory audit.
  3. Seize the Phone: If the driver was using a handheld device, take note. Commercial drivers are strictly prohibited from using handheld phones while operating a vehicle.
